President Pratibha Patil announced a new housing scheme to create a slum free India in five years

The new scheme could have a large corpus of over Rs 50,000 crore and the Housing Ministry could be allocated Rs 5,000 to 10,000 crore in the Budget.

The President of India had outlined yesterday and in line with that it is going to require a large corpus to actually execute a slum free India. Sources say that the Housing Ministry is expecting a budgetary allocation of Rs 5,000-10,000 crore this year for this housing scheme. This allocation is going to be for partly to implement the project as well as an inter subsidy so that people can actually buy these houses. Real estate has become a state subject. To take part in this housing scheme, State governments will have to promise that the transfer of the land title will be transferred to beneficiaries. Sources added that the beneficiaries should be women. In case of a joint title then the first person whose name should come into that joint title should be that of a woman. So the idea is to make women economical independent and empower them at the same time.
