Strides Arcolab To Supply Tamiflu In 3-4 days

With the death toll for swine flu reaching ten, the threat of the H1N1 virus is becoming more palpable in India. Where the government, on a war-footing basis, is trying to curb the menace, Strides Arcolab has been chosen as the company to be supplying Tamiflu, a drug used to treat Swine Flu. The company, which makes oseltamivir capsules—the generic version of Roche's Tamiflu, said the final number of doses to be sold by the company will depend on the government's decision on how much and from whom to procure the drug from.

VS Iyer, CEO-India operations, Strides Arcolab, said the company was ready with 2 million doses of Tamiflu. “We had mentioned last time that we would have capacities to produce in excess of 2 million doses per month starting June 2009. We are now in a position to do that.” The company should be able to supply Tamiflu doses in the next three to four days, he added.

Aloka Sen Gupta, President-Business Development of Strides Arcolab, said the government was discussing the quantity required. “Quantum of Tamiflu order will come by August 12.”

At 14:46 hours IST, the share was trading at Rs 155.70, up Rs 4.05, or 2.67% with volumes of 1,230,990 shares, which increased 166.7% compared to its 5-day average of 4,61,550 shares and jumped 954% compared to its 30-day average of 1,16,798 shares. It touched an intraday high of Rs 166.45 and an intraday low of Rs 151.60.

Iyer: We had mentioned last time that we would have capacities to produce in excess of 2 million doses per month starting June 2009. We are now in a position to do that. That is the most important development. We are able to make these doses available as we have geared up with the formulation as well as the facility to manufacture it.

Gupta: The order is something under discussion with the government. We will know about the final order by tomorrow. We are a generic manufacturer; our product is under prequalification by the World Heath Organisation (WHO) on fast track. It is registered in India and we have ready stocks. The government is talking about substantial procurement. So we will have to wait and see how much it is.

Iyer: The government has already taken a lot of actions. So, I think the government supplies will begin shortly. As soon as they give the announcements of procurement, we should be ready to supply it.

Gupta: We are completely ready; we are ready with the active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), we are ready with the finish formulation. So the government has to say, “Switch on,” and we are ready.

Iyer: This is a situation that the government is handling and handling quite well. Therefore, we would like to go with their directives. That is the way we would like to approach it.

Iyer: We are still to get the quantities required by the government. Therefore, we had said that we would be ready with in excess of 2 million doses and that is what we are gearing up in the company. We need to see as we go along in terms of what we require from the government costs and accordingly we will take a position.

Iyer: That is still too early days at the moment. We are just kind of getting into the finishing of production and packaging. We should be ready with that.

Iyer: We should be ready to supply them in the next three to four days because as this production is going on, we should be packing them and then getting into the market.

Gupta: I don’t know. The government is still discussing this and the government will decide how much to procure and from whom. We hope to see a fairly large quantity, so let’s wait and see.
